The RNLI’s lifesaving operations on Merseyside’s beaches were impacted last summer when thieves stole a vital quadbike from Formby Beach.
The red Honda all-terrain vehicle, one of six used by RNLI lifeguards, was stolen after thieves broke into a storage container overnight between 2 and 3 July. These quadbikes are essential for beach patrols, transporting lifesaving equipment, and responding quickly to emergencies along the remote coastlines of Crosby, Southport, Formby and Ainsdale.
Andy Jordan, RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor, describes the theft: “This equipment is vital for allowing us to operate and help people in difficulty in the water off Formby Beach. It’s so disheartening that equipment funded by our generous donors has been stolen.” In response, Merseyside Police recommended improving quadbike security.
VIN Chip provided a complimentary fitting of our forensic marking and theft deterrent system, which has now been successfully installed on the remaining five quadbikes. This proactive move ensures the RNLI can continue its mission with greater peace of mind.
Martyn Leigh, Police Liaison Manager at VIN Chip, commented: “The RNLI's equipment is critical for saving lives. By adding VIN Chip technology, including long-range UHF RFID chips, tamper-evident security labels, and registration to a secure national database, we’re providing extra layers of protection that deters theft and increases the chance of recovering stolen vehicles.”
This proactive approach directly supports the aims of the Equipment Theft (Prevention) Act 2023, which places greater emphasis on securing agricultural and all-terrain vehicles through permanent identification and traceability, essential in tackling rising machinery and vehicle theft across the UK.
At VIN Chip, we’re proud to support organisations like the RNLI by securing the off-road vehicles they rely on to save lives. As demand for all-terrain vehicle protection grows across the UK, especially in sectors like public service and agriculture, we remain committed to helping organisations and individuals protect their essential assets.
