Following on from the nationwide training initiative last month, VIN Chip’s Nick Mayell and Martyn Leigh were recently invited back to Scotland to participate in a special rural crime film. The filming took place at Lindores Equestrian, one of Scotland’s premier equestrian training venues, and showcased the ongoing collaboration between VIN Chip and Police Scotland in the fight against rural crime.
This latest project highlights the critical importance of equipping officers with the tools and training to tackle the growing threat of theft from farms and rural properties.

Rural Crime on the Rise in Scotland
According to Police Scotland, the scale of rural theft in 2025 has been significant. So far this year:
have been stolen, with an estimated total value of £536,500. The worst-affected regions include The Lothians and Scottish Borders, areas with a strong agricultural presence and active rural communities.
Officers are urging farmers, landowners, and rural businesses to take preventative action to deter organised criminal groups who continue to target these remote areas.
How VIN Chip Helps Protect Rural Assets
VIN CHIP’s technology is designed to protect valuable machinery — from quads and trailers to tractors and other plant equipment. Here is how it helps:
- Multi-layered security system: VIN Chip uses a combination of visible and hidden identifiers, making it easy for trained officers to trace stolen machinery quickly.
- Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRiS): VIN Chip supports fast checks and real-time verification via the CRiS database.
- Deters theft before it happens: Criminals are far less likely to target equipment that is clearly marked and traceable.
- Insurance savings: May qualify equipment owners for lower insurance premiums.
Standing Together Against Rural Crime
John Lally, CEO of VIN Chip, commented: “We are proud to support Police Scotland in their efforts to tackle rural crime through the use of our VIN Chip technology. Agricultural theft is not just a financial loss, it is a disruption to livelihoods and communities. By giving officers the tools to identify stolen machinery quickly and accurately, we are helping to make rural areas less attractive to criminals and more resilient against organised theft. Collaboration like this is vital in keeping our farms and countryside secure.”
