GPS Equipment
Farming communities rely on their Global positioning systems (GPS) for a multitude of tasks and the efficiency of a farm is often dependent on it. The last thing farmers need is to arrive at their yard to find their GPS navigation equipment stolen, because of the high resale value and easy portability.
It is recommended that transportable GPS systems fitted to tractors, which are left out overnight, should be removed and stored securely, but not within the tractor. This also applies to combine harvesters which may be left in fields during harvest.
According to NFU Mutual ‘’the cost of GPS theft has more than doubled to over £500,000 in the first four months of 2023, compared to the same period last year.’ They are advising farmers to be vigilant.
The NFU Mutual is also urging farmers to protect their equipment and take steps to make it as difficult as possible for thieves.
DC Chris Piggott, from the National Construction and Agri Thefts Team (NCATT), which forms part of the National Rural Crime Unit, said:
“We’re seeing reports of thefts from every part of the UK, with recent clusters in North West and North East England.”
“They are putting a lot of effort into identifying farm equipment fitted with GPS, watching those farms and even using drones to spot opportunities to return at night. They go to great lengths to get hold of kit, breaking through locked gates and buildings security systems to take GPS from machinery.”
